VisionMD: what is actually in it

Serving size: 1 softgel. Matches lutein and zeaxanthin exactly — and nothing else.

AREDS2 match: 2 of 6 nutrients

A carotenoid formula rather than an AREDS2 formula. Lutein 10 mg and zeaxanthin 2 mg land exactly on the trial doses, which is rarer than it sounds. But there is no vitamin C, no zinc and no copper at all, and vitamin E sits at 181 IU against the trial's 400.

What this means

The 1,530 mcg of vitamin A comes from mixed carotenes, which behave like beta-carotene. AREDS2 dropped beta-carotene after former smokers on it showed more lung cancers. Anyone with a smoking history should read that line on the label before anything else on this page.
